A tangy, spicy, and refreshing Chana Chaat (Chickpea Salad) that’s perfect as a snack, appetizer, or light meal. Packed with protein-rich chickpeas, fresh vegetables, and flavorful spices, this dish is a must-try!

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 ½ cups boiled chickpeas (chana)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 small cucumber, finely chopped
  • 1 small boiled potato, diced (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander, chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (adjust to spice preference)
  • ½ teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • ½ teaspoon chaat masala
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red chili powder (optional, for extra heat)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind chutney (or date chutney for a milder sweetness)
  • ½ cup crispy sev or papdi (for garnish, optional)
  • 1 tablespoon yogurt (optional, for a creamy twist)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chickpeas

    • If using canned chickpeas, rinse and drain them well. If using dried chickpeas, soak overnight and boil until tender.
  2. Mix the Vegetables

    • In a large bowl, combine the boiled chickpeas, chopped onions, tomatoes, cucumber, and potatoes.
  3. Add the Spices

    • Sprinkle roasted cumin powder, chaat masala, salt, black pepper, and red chili powder over the mixture.
    • Toss well to combine.
  4. Add Flavors

    • Drizzle lemon juice and tamarind chutney over the mixture.
    • Mix thoroughly to ensure even coating.
  5. Garnish and Serve

    • Top with chopped coriander, green chilies, and crispy sev or crushed papdi for extra crunch.
    • If using yogurt, drizzle it on top for a creamy texture.
