Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds (about 1 kg) russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup whole milk (adjust to preference)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (optional for extra creaminess)
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: chopped chives, garlic, or grated cheese

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:

    • Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks for even cooking.
  2. Cook the Potatoes:

    • Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.
    • Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to simmer. Cook for about 15–20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  3. Drain and Mash:

    • Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the pot.
    • Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or a ricer for a smoother texture.
  4. Add Dairy:

    • In a small saucepan, heat the milk and cream (if using) until warm but not boiling.
    • Add the warm milk mixture to the mashed potatoes, a little at a time, stirring until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Incorporate Butter:

    • Stir in the butter until melted and fully combined.
    • Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  6. Optional Garnishes:

    • Add your favorite toppings like chives, roasted garlic, or a sprinkle of cheese.
