Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds (about 1 kg) russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ cup whole milk (adjust to preference)
- ¼ cup heavy cream (optional for extra creaminess)
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- Optional toppings: chopped chives, garlic, or grated cheese
Instructions:
Prepare the Potatoes:
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks for even cooking.
Cook the Potatoes:
- Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.
- Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to simmer. Cook for about 15–20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
Drain and Mash:
- Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the pot.
- Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or a ricer for a smoother texture.
Add Dairy:
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk and cream (if using) until warm but not boiling.
- Add the warm milk mixture to the mashed potatoes, a little at a time, stirring until you reach your desired consistency.
Incorporate Butter:
- Stir in the butter until melted and fully combined.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Optional Garnishes:
- Add your favorite toppings like chives, roasted garlic, or a sprinkle of cheese.
