Sweet and Sour Cabbages

A flavorful and tangy dish featuring cabbage in a sweet and sour sauce, perfect to serve with vegetable rice or as a side dish.

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 large cabbage, cut into square-shaped pieces
  • 1 large onion, cut into square-shaped pieces
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • ½ cup tomato ketchup
  • 1½ cups chicken stock (or vegetable stock for a vegetarian option)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1½ tablespoons sugar
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce
  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon corn flour
  • ½ cup water

Instructions

  1. Cook the Vegetables

    • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
    • Add onions, cabbage, and salt.
    • Sauté and cook for 10–15 minutes until the cabbage is slightly tender.
  2. Prepare the Sauce

    • In a bowl, mix chicken stock, tomato ketchup, chili sauce, sugar, black pepper, and salt.
    • Stir well until combined.
  3. Combine and Simmer

    • Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked cabbage and stir well.
    • Let it cook for 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  4. Thicken the Sauce

    • In a separate bowl, dissolve corn flour in ½ cup of water.
    • Gradually add this mixture to the cabbage while stirring.
    • Continue cooking until the sauce thickens.
  5. Finish and Serve

    • Add lemon juice, give it a final stir, and remove from heat.
    • Serve warm with vegetable rice or as a side dish.
