Beef Bulgogi
Ingredients
For the Marinade:
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp brown sugar (or honey)
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp grated garlic (about 4 cloves)
- 1 tbsp grated ginger
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- 1/4 cup chopped green onions (scallions)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)
- 1 tbsp pear or apple (grated or puréed, optional, for tenderizing)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
For the Beef:
- 1 lb (450g) thinly sliced beef (ribeye, sirloin, or flank steak work well)
For Cooking:
- 1–2 tbsp vegetable oil (for stir-frying)
Instructions:
Prepare the Marinade: In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, gochujang (or red pepper flakes), green onions, sesame seeds (if using), grated pear or apple (optional), and black pepper. Stir well to dissolve the sugar and combine all the ingredients.
Marinate the Beef: Place the thinly sliced beef in a large resealable bag or bowl. Pour the marinade over the beef, making sure the beef is fully coated. Seal the bag or cover the bowl, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight for more intense flavor.
Cook the Beef:
- Stir-Frying: Heat a large pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add 1–2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Once hot, add the marinated beef in a single layer (you may need to do this in batches). Stir-fry for 3–5 minutes until the beef is fully cooked and browned.
- Grilling: Alternatively, you can grill the marinated beef on a preheated grill over medium-high heat for 2–3 minutes per side, until slightly charred and cooked through.
Serve: Serve the Beef Bulgogi over steamed rice, along with some traditional Korean side dishes like kimchi or sautéed vegetables. Garnish with extra sesame seeds and green onions if desired.
