Bran Bread
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups (315g) whole wheat flour
- 1 cup (60g) wheat bran
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar or honey
- 1 ½ tsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup (240ml) warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
Instructions
Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar (or honey), and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
Combine Dry Ingredients:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, wheat bran, and salt.
Mix Wet Ingredients:
- Add the frothy yeast mixture and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the Dough:
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Let It Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
Shape the Dough:
- Punch the dough down and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let it rise again for about 30–45 minutes.
Bake the Bread:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30–35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.
Cool and Serve:
- Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy!
